Electrical RAMS: what to review before work starts

What an electrical contractor should review when adapting RAMS for installation, testing and related site work.

Define the electrical work and interfaces

Confirm the installation, testing, alteration or maintenance work, work area, programme and interfaces with other trades, occupiers, the client or principal contractor.

Establish what electrical systems are present

Make sure relevant information about the electrical system and the work is available. For refurbishment or work near services, document the conditions on the actual site rather than assuming a system is dead, isolated or out of the way.

Plan isolation and control of energy

Consider systems involved, isolation arrangements, testing, permits and how work will be controlled and communicated. Plan work so that work on or near live equipment is avoided where possible, with safe isolation procedures followed by competent people.

Review access, equipment and temporary supplies

Check access equipment, tools, temporary supplies, cables, storage and the work area. Equipment and supply arrangements must suit the work and environment.

Confirm competence and coordination

Check competence, supervision, briefings and site-specific rules. Make clear who needs to know about the work, including other trades or occupiers who could affect the work area or electrical arrangements.

Tailor before briefing or submission

Add the actual site details, sequence, workforce, equipment, interfaces and client controls. A template provides an editable foundation but cannot replace a competent review of the real job.
