Construction method statement template: what to include
A practical UK construction guide to the sections a method statement template should cover, how it links to risk assessment, and what to tailor before submitting.
Start with the actual activity
Name the work clearly and set out where it will happen, who is involved, what equipment and materials are being used, and where the activity meets other trades or site operations. A broad title such as construction works is rarely specific enough to help a team plan a real job.
Set out the sequence of work
Write the practical order of operations: access and set-up, preparation, the task itself, checks, changes in conditions, and completion. The point is to make the proposed method understandable to the people carrying it out—not to create a long document that nobody uses.
Connect the method to the risks and controls
The method statement should draw on the relevant risk assessment: the hazards, people at risk and controls that apply to this job. Include arrangements that matter to the task, such as access, equipment, permits, isolation, supervision, PPE, deliveries or interfaces where relevant.
Add job-specific arrangements
Before use or submission, review the site address, client or principal-contractor requirements, programme, work area, workforce, welfare, emergency arrangements and local rules. A template gives a foundation; it cannot know actual site conditions for you.
Check it can be briefed and used
The final document should be clear enough to brief to the team and useful enough to guide the work. If the sequence, controls or responsibilities change, revise the document rather than relying on a previous version that no longer describes the job.
Choose a meaningful editable starting point
An editable Word template with relevant, populated content can reduce time spent beginning from an empty page. It still needs competent review and tailoring; buying a template does not guarantee approval or compliance.
